Disclaimer — why ProxiPals is free
ProxiPals is completely free to use. We keep it free by showing a small number of clearly-labeled, location-relevant advertisements from local businesses, and by accepting voluntary donations from users who want to support the project. That is the entire business model: we do not sell your data, your location history, or your attention to anyone else.
ProxiPals introduces people who are physically near each other. We do not vet, background-check, or verify users, and we cannot guarantee anyone is who they say they are. You are solely responsible for your interactions and meetings with other users. ProxiPals is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind; to the fullest extent permitted by law we accept no liability for interactions that begin on the app.
Privacy policy
- Location: your live position is used only while the app is open, only to compute distances to nearby users and local sponsors. We do not store a history of where you have been.
- Profile: we hold the display name and profile picture (photo or emoji) you choose, and show them only to people your visibility setting allows.
- Visibility is yours to control: at any time you can be visible to everyone nearby, visible only to your connections, or invisible to all.
- Connections are private: nobody can see who you are connected with. Connections exist only between the two people who mutually waved.
- Ratings never leave your phone: your 🙂 😐 🙁 ratings of people you met are stored only on your own device. They are never uploaded, and the rated person never knows.
- Moderation records: if a message you send is flagged by our language filter or another user reports you, we keep a short excerpt and reason so an administrator can review it fairly.
- Video calls are peer-to-peer between you and your connection; the video stream does not pass through or get recorded by our servers.
- Advertising: sponsors never receive your identity or precise location — they only receive anonymous counts of in-zone impressions and taps.
- Donations: if you donate, we record the amount and the name you optionally provide, for accounting only.
Community guidelines & moderation
- No nudity or sexually explicit photos — profile photos must be appropriate for all ages.
- No hate speech or racism. Slurs and abusive language are automatically blocked and flagged.
- Keep the cussing down. Occasional profanity is censored; message after message of foul language gets flagged.
- Two flags suspend your account automatically. Suspended accounts are held for review by an administrator, who decides on reinstatement or permanent removal.
- Report anyone who makes you uncomfortable with the 🚩 button — reports go into the same review pipeline.
Safety guidelines for meeting people
- Meet in public. ProxiPals works because you're already out among people — keep first meetings in busy public places.
- Tell someone. Share where you're going and who you're meeting with a friend.
- Use video chat first. Once connected, a short video call is a good way to confirm someone matches their profile before meeting.
- Watch your radius. Your distance is shown to others while visible — go invisible or connections-only whenever you prefer.
- Trust your instincts. You never owe anyone a meeting, an explanation, or a wave back. Block by simply not responding, and report anything that feels wrong.
- Minors: ProxiPals is intended for users 18 and older.
Accessibility statement
ProxiPals aims to conform to WCAG 2.1 AA: the app is fully keyboard-operable, uses semantic landmarks and live regions for screen readers, provides text alternatives for images and emoji avatars, maintains at least 4.5:1 text contrast, and respects your reduced-motion system preference. If you hit an accessibility barrier, please tell us via the contact below and we will fix it.
